About ARETE and Who I am

What is the ARETE program?
ARETE is a structured listening program built around one idea: that broken sleep and an unspoken interior are usually the same problem. The program works in five movements: Articulate, Review, Engage, Transform, and Ease into sleep. It's not therapy. It's not coaching. It's a held space where what you've been carrying finally gets to land somewhere, and your nervous system gets to follow.

Who is this service for?
People who function well and sleep badly. People who have tried the obvious things—the sleep hygiene advice, the melatonin, the white noise, PAP device, and the earlier bedtime—still end up at 3 am staring at a ceiling. People who are competent, capable, and exhausted in a way that doesn't quite match anything they can point to.

You don't need a diagnosis. You don't need to arrive knowing what's wrong. You just need to show up.

Must be 21 or older. English only. USA and select international applicants are welcome.

Is this therapy?
No. I'm a structured listener, not a therapist. I don't diagnose, treat, or prescribe. I don't interpret what you bring or steer it toward a conclusion. I follow what you bring. There's a meaningful difference between being witnessed and being treated, and this approach is the former.

If you're currently working with a therapist or clinician, this can sit alongside that work. Many people find it does.

What happens in a session?
Sixty minutes on Zoom. You speak. I listen — without redirecting, reframing, or fixing. From there, we look at what came up together, identify what may be standing between you and decent sleep, and explore what tools or approaches might actually fit your situation rather than someone else's.
You leave with a full transcript of the session. Yours to keep, refer back to, or share with whoever else you work with.

What does it cost?
The first fifteen minutes are free inside the full session, not as a separate call. Pricing for full sessions and extended programs is provided after your application is reviewed and we've confirmed we're a suitable fit.

How long does the program run?
That's your call. One session. Three sessions over three months. Or a longer arrangement, if that's what fits. There's no fixed package you have to commit to upfront. We start with one session and go from there.

What does it mean by "application reviewed"?
I work in cohorts, not an open calendar. When you apply, I review what you've shared and confirm whether the opportunity is the right fit before we proceed. This isn't gatekeeping. It's making sure the time is useful for you. You'll hear back with the next steps after I've reviewed your application.

Will this approach work for me?
I can't promise an outcome. What I can tell you is that the sequence works—witnessing what's been running underneath is what moved the needle for me after twenty years of knowing sleep medicine and still not sleeping. Your readiness and what you bring to it determine if that sequence works for you.
If you're not sure yet, read the story. If something lands, apply.

Who am I, and why does this exist?
I'm Bill Bistak, a Toronto-based sleep clinician with twenty years in sleep medicine. Then everything collapsed—career, relationships, the works—and I became the one who couldn't sleep. Nobody fixed me. What finally worked was being witnessed. When the unspoken feelings had a place to be expressed, my nervous system stopped working overtime. The sleep came back.
I built ARETE because I couldn't unfind that sequence once I'd mapped it.

What is the Opathian State?
It's a term I coined for a very common experience that didn't have a name. The Opathian state is what it feels like to be fully functional and completely gone at the same time—in the same body, on the same Tuesday, in the same bed where sleep should be but isn't. Not broken. Adapted. And quietly costing you sleep, you don't know you're losing.
The full definition and etymology live at billbistak.com/the-opathian-state.

What is The Gate?
The Gate is a novel I wrote before I understood the concept I was exploring. The main character, Billy Wexler spends the entire book functioning—holding things together, showing up, performing competence—while something runs alongside him unseen. The ending reveals the nature of that unseen force.
It's the Opathian State as a story. It came before the framework. In a lot of ways, it's where all of this started.

About Booking (billbistak.com/book-online)
How do I apply for a session?
Fill out the application form at billbistak.com/book-online. Tell me what's going on in your own words — no clinical language required, no right way to say it. I'll review what you've shared and follow up directly.

What happens after I apply?
You'll hear from me personally — not an automated response. I'll confirm whether we're a good fit, answer any questions you have, and let you know next steps, including scheduling and session investment.

How long until I hear back?
Within a few business days. If you haven't heard anything after five days, check your spam folder and then email admin@billbistak.com directly.

Can I book a session as a gift for someone else?
Sessions work best when the person coming has chosen to come. If someone in your life would benefit from this, the most useful thing you can do is share the site and let them apply for themselves.

What if I apply and it's not the right fit?
Then I'll tell you honestly, and where I can, point you toward something that might serve you better. No pressure in either direction.

What if I'm already in therapy — can I still apply?
Yes. This isn't therapy and doesn't replace it. If you're currently working with a clinician, mention that in your application. It's useful context.

I'm not in the USA or Canada. Can I still apply?
Select international applicants are welcome. English only. Note this in your application and I'll confirm whether your location works logistically.
